Less invasive alternative to liposuction
Dr Skin Centre is a multidisciplinary centre specialising
in minimally and non invasive treatments. One of the doctors
is an international expert on lasers and has written extensively
in medical journals. Dr Skin Centre offers the latest medical
and laser treatments and is able to cater for individual needs.
Laserlipolysis is an advanced,
laserassisted liposculpture technique used in the removal
of excess fatty tissue.
Laser Lipolysis promotes the breaking up of the membranes
of fat cells, transforming them into an oily substance that
is absorbed and eliminated in a natural manner from the body.
The results give rise to a harmonious body shape, without
the secondary effects of more aggressive procedures. The laser
is emitted through small fibers (only 1mm diameter) allowing
a minimally invasive liposculpture treatment.
The advantages of Laser Lipolysis:
- May be conducted in a doctor’s rooms
- Minimal invasiveness
- Virtually no blood loss
- Fat may be removed naturally
- Minimal recovery time and no bandages
- Previously difficult areas can now be treated
- Several areas can be treated in the same visit with virtually
invisible entry points
- Can be performed as a genuine “walk in and walk
out” procedure for most treated areas
Laser Lipolysis Advances Body
Contouring Techniques
The Laser Lipolysis pulsed laser system removes fat from
areas typically unsuitable for traditional liposuction. This
procedure, known as Laserlipolisi, breaks down subcutaneous
fat cells so that the liquid fat may be removed naturally.
The procedure is significantly less traumatic than traditional
liposuction and involves practically no loss of blood.
“Laserlipolisi provides a great option for people who
want to improve the focal areas of unwanted fat or overlying
laxity, especially at this time when many people are looking
for minimally invasive treatments with less downtime,”
said Karen Kim, M.D. of Laser & Skin Surgery Center of
New York.
“There is a distinct lack of bruising and fast recovery,
with results after only one treatment.” Dr. Katz is
clinical professor of dermatology at The Mount Sinai School
of Medicine, director of the Cosmetic Surgery & Laser
Clinic at Mount Sinai Medical Center, and director of the
JUVA Skin & Laser Center (New York).
After treating more than 100 patients with the Laser Lipolysis
system, Uncheol Yeo, M.D., Ph.D., education director of S
& U Skin Clinic (Seoul, Korea) is also a believer. “My
nurses who had Laserlipolisi treatment had minimal discomfort
and resumed work the day of surgery. Traditional liposuction
may be more efficient,” he added, “but Laserlipolisi
is better in terms of safety and convenience.
With it you can more effectively treat areas like the face,
neck, ankle, and calf. Laserlipolisi treatment, or laser lipolysis,
involves the insertion of a 1.0 mm fiber, under the skin with
an 18 gauge needle after tumescent local anesthetic. The Laser
Lipolysis system disrupts the cell membranes of fat cells
and the collagen septa with laser energy — basically
melting the fat.
It takes a few weeks to see results as the body slowly but
surely eliminates the fat naturally. “Interestingly,
when patients come back five or six days later you can hardly
tell they’ve had anything done,” said Dr. Katz.
Because Laserlipolisi is minimally invasive, a small bandage
to protect the insertion wound is about the only post treatment
care required. Some patients may additionally wear compression
garments eg. bike shorts, said Dr. Kim. Dr. Yeo recommends
a three day course of antibiotics as well.
According to Dr Yeo, side effects are minimal, which contributes
to the extremely low downtime. Common side effects such as
inflammation, tenderness, minor bruising, or temporary lumping
subside within a week.
Other lasers treat fat deposits with a transdermal approach,
using light through the skin from the outside. "There's
no comparison," said Dr. Kim. "With other lasers
you're not actually touching the area, so you'll see a definite
reduction in potential efficacy. Laser Lipolysis works under
the skin, in contact with the treatment area.
"It's also for areas anywhere on the body that have
overlying skin laxity, especially of you're a relatively thin,
fit, and healthy person looking for additional toning and
tightening." According to Dr. Katz, "Laser Lipolysis
tightens the skin as it removes the fat, which typical liposuction
doesn't do."
The description of the ideal candidate for Laser lipolysisgiven
by Dr. Katz echoed those of Drs Kim and Yeo, "I don't
think it's much different than traditional liposuction - someone
who exercises regularly, is not obese or just has localized
fat deposits that they can't get rid of with exercise and
diet. That's really the ideal patient."
According to Dr. Yeo, "As with traditional liposuction,
some patients mistakenly think that Laser Lipolysis can remove
all their unwanted fat. It's important that the patients have
realistic expectations."

Who is the ideal candidate
for Laser Lipolysis?
The ideal candidate for Laser Lipolysis is someone who is
near to normal weight and has areas of concern that are resistant
to diet and exercise. Laser Lipolysis can treat most areas
and is perfect for body sculpting.
I have a large scar on my abdomen
after surgery. Can I still have Laser Lipolysis treatments
on this area?
Yes. The result can make the scar look less obvious by reducing
the bulk fat adjacent. A consultation with your doctor is
advised.
I have recently lost a large
amount of weight and am left with saggy skin. Can Laser Lipolysis
reduce this?
Laser Lipolysis liquefies the unwanted fat and also produces
collagen shrinkage in the skin improving skin retraction.
It is of no great value for people with poor skin elasticity.
Excessive saggy skin can only be treated surgically.
How long does the treatment
take?
The length of time for the procedure differs depending on
the area, or areas treated. To treat a chin for example takes
less than an hour.
What post operative care will
I need?
Because it is a minimally invasive technique, recovery time
is minimal. Patients may experience minor swelling, bruising
or tenderness. It is recommended that a garment eg. bike shorts
is worn for at least one week. You may be required to rest
in the surgery for one hour or so. Normal activities can be
resumed the following day.
Will I require follow-up visits?
The Doctor would see you one week after the procedure, and
generally there are follow up visits as well.
How long until I see results?
The liquid fat or ‘lysate’ created during the
Laser Lypolysis procedure can be left for the body to metabolise
and eventually eliminate naturally. Without aspiration, the
first results are seen in around four to six weeks. Earlier
results will be seen if the lysate is aspirated. As with traditional
liposuction the final result will be seen at approximately
four months.
Am I able to have the Laser
Lipolysis procedure if I am on medication?
This question, along with your medical history will require
discussion with the doctor during consultation.
Does it hurt?
Minimal discomfort is one of the outstanding features of this
procedure.
I have used treatments before
with little results. What is different about Laser Lipolysis?
Other non-invasive treatments do not accurately target the
problem areas and hence can have unpredictable results. Laser
Lipolysis works under the skin, with a visible guiding light
to specifically treat the target areas, providing a more direct
approach.
How much will it cost?
Each procedure area is different. Prices will vary depending
on the area treated, the size of the area, the time taken
to treat the area or if multiple areas are treated in one
procedure. Your doctor will be able to provide you with a
more accurate estimate upon consultation.
Is it as expensive as traditional
liposuction treatments?
No.
